バンガロールからホスペットという町まで行くのに、夜行列車に乗りました。バンガロールを夜の１０時頃出て、ホスペットに翌朝７時頃着。
夜行列車の座席クラスは７段階くらいあり、私はそのうち上から２番目をチョイス。ほとんどの外国人旅行客は上から３番目くらいまでの席を買います。

I took an over night train to Hospet from Bangalore.
It left Bangalore around 10 at night, and arrived in Hospet about 7 in the morning. There were about 7 different seat classes. I got the second one from the top. It seems most of foreign travelers get this ticket or one below.

２段ベッドで、枕やシーツは支給されます。
カーテンもついてて、プライバシーも結構守れます。この席のクラスになると、お金持ちのインド人が多いです。みんなビジネスマンっぽい。
ベッドが狭くて小さくて、しかもバックパック＋ラックサック＋もうひとつ袋と共に寝ころぶのはちょっと難しかったです。
すっごく居心地悪くて、寝れないんだろうな〜と思っていたら、意外にきれいで寝心地もよく、爆睡してしまいました（笑）

The beds were bunk beds. A pillow and two sheets were provided.(They were v nice and clean) It wasn't easy to fit myself, a 65L backpack,
a rucksack and an extra bag within a tiny bed. Still I slept like a baby though!



そして気づいたらホスペット到着。
この町自体は別に何もないので、すぐに目的地ハンピへ出発！しました。
夜行列車の旅、おすすめですよ〜

I was in Hospet when I woke up.
There isn't much in Hospet, so I left there for Hampi.

きらびやかで、大きな宮殿でした。宮殿内は撮影禁止なので、外見だけです。「栄華ここに極めたり」という感じで、こんなところに住むってどんな気分なんだろう、と想像していました。貧乏性であまり堂々とできなさそうです（笑）

長らくブログを休んでしまい、ひさしぶりの再開です。
何と２月から書いてなかったんですね・・・筆無精もいいとこです（汗）

先月から、ロンドン劇場では番外編として南インドの旅をご紹介しています。おまけの話で、写真も載せているのですが、やはりスペースが足りない！ので、ちょっとずつ、このブログに載せられなかった分を載せていこうと思います。インド旅行は３月末から４月末の一ヶ月でした。本当は２〜３ヶ月かけて、全土をめぐりたかった！のですが、お仕事の関係で断念。しかし、一ヶ月だけでも十分楽しかったです。

Hello there!
It's been about 6 months since I'd written the last diary...
I've really got to be a diligent writer!
I was away in The South of India for a month from the end of March.
(Could this be a good excuse for not updating the blog?) Originally I wanted to travel all around the country in 2 or 3 months, though I couldn't because of my work. Still it was absolutely fab to spend a month in India.

バンガロールで行ったインディアン・コーヒーハウス。チェーン店で、色んなところでみました。ウエイターが民族衣装を着ています。
超急発展都市、バンガロールにあって、激安でコーヒーや軽食が食べられます。確かコーヒーは８ルピー（約２０円）、マサラドーサ（軽食）は、１８ルピー（約４５円）くらいでした。

This is Indian Coffee House on MG road in Bangalore. It's a cafe chain. The waiters wear traditional costumes.
Bangalore is the fastest developing city in India, and all prices are going up at the moment. Still this coffee house offers cheap coffee and snacks.

東ロンドンで、毎週土曜日に開かれる小規模のマーケット、ブロードウェイ・マーケットに行ってきました。あいにくの雨でしたが、新しい場所へ行くのは楽しいものです。映画などで有名になったポートベローマーケットや、人気のスピタルフィールドマーケットと違い、ローカルな雰囲気のただようマーケットでした。古着などファッション系のお店はほとんどなく、有機栽培野菜や、お肉、魚、そして暖かい食べ物を売る屋台が多かったです。

私と友人が食べたのは、ガーナ料理。（写真・右）
ぴりっと辛いカレーのような感じでした。とてもおいしかったです。
屋台で買って、食べ歩きは久しぶりだったので、たのしかったです。

I always wanted to go to Broadway market.
It's open every Saturday in Hackney, east London.For the past few years, markets in London have got so popular that lots of them have lost original characters.Portbello market in the west became very famous after the film, Nottinghill. Spitalfields market has expanded, and it seems too posh now.
I really liked Broadway market, because it still has "the local feeling". Instead of stalls for fashion, there were many organic green grocers and butchers. There were quite a few stalls which sold hot meals.
My friend and I had this Ghanaian dish. (The photo on the right)
It was sort of spicy casserole dish. It was very tasty!



他にも、焼きたてパンや、近郊で採れたキノコなどが売っていました。
有機栽培のリンゴ屋さんも、自家製リンゴジュースをとりあつかっていて、とても素敵でしたよ。何年住んでいても、まだまだ発見の多いロンドン。
やっぱりいいな〜と思います。

Phew! how full we were! I used to dream of the house made of candies from Henzel and Gretel when I was a child. It was very fun to make the house, and yummy to eat it!

クリスマスですね！
わくわくする気持ちと「もう今年も終わりか〜。」という気持ちと半々です。大人になってから、時の過ぎるのが速いこと！昔、両親が言っていた言葉を実感しています。

こちらはお正月よりクリスマスが年の瀬のビッグイベント。もちろんキリスト教徒の人々にとっては、大切な日。キリスト教徒でない人でも、家族で集まって、のんびりするのを楽しみにしています。ロンドンの都会の生活に疲れて、田舎の実家へ帰るのを心待ちにしている人もたくさんいます。

この時期になると、街中にクリスマスデコレーションが観られます。
毎年「今年はどんな明かりがつくのかな」と気になります。

I can't believe it's already Christmas. The time seems to be running faster and faster!

I went shopping in the central London the other day. Oxford St was absolutely packed with people carrying lots of bags. It was only Tue evening though! Most of people in London are from outside the city.
It's going to be quite in the streets over Christmas.I may stroll round town with my friend.It's going to be interesting to see empty streets.

I went to photograph this year's Christmas decorations.
The one on the right is a huge Christmas tree near St.Paul.It was pretty with the moon on the back.



ロンドンのショッピングストリート、リージェントストリートの今年のデコレーションは、人の動きを感知して色を変えるオブジェ。（写真）
黄色になったり緑になったり青になったり。私の友人間ではあまり評価は高くなかったのですが、私はそのシンプルさを結構気に入っています。

さて今年も１年、様々な方々にお世話になりました。
１年を感謝の気持ちで締めくくるのはいいものですね。また来年、新しい気持ちでがんばろうと思います。それでは皆様、よい年をお迎えください。

こんにちは！約１ヶ月半ぶりの更新・・・もうちょっとマメに書かねばと思いつつ、忙しくしている間に時間がたってしまいました。
最近は９月から始めた勉強に従事していて、絵本のお仕事は少しお休みしていたのですが、今回知り合いの紹介で、小学校を訪問してきました。
今回の小学校は、ロンドンのど真ん中！なので工事の音やらバスの音やらで周りがうるさく、お話しするのもちょっと大変でした。子供たちは、はたして授業に集中できるんでしょうか。

It's been ages since the last time I updated this blog! I'm sorry for the long silence. Since early September, I haven't had much time to spend for anything else but studying. I'm on an intensive course, which runs till Dec. Of course I'm still carrying on with illustration though!

I can't remember when I visited a school last time, but this time I went to one right in the heart of London.

今回は２年生、４年生５年生を回ってきました。読み聞かせをしたあと、ワニの外国語版を見せると、子供たちは大喜び！「これはいったい何語でしょうか！」といってスペイン語版を見せると、「日本語！」やら「フランス語！」やら、競って言い合っていました。
日本の小学校の様子や、街の写真なども興味津々で、色々質問されました。
I went round year 2,4 and 5. It was great to be back in school. I realised again how much I loved talking to them! I tend to stimulate them by giving lots and lots of questions. They love thinking and guessing for it. I read my books as usual, then showed them international editions of Mr.Wani. The children usually go crazy guessing which language they could be.
They asked me loads of questions too when I showed them pictures from Japan.

One World（世界は一つ）をテーマにした一週間の最後の授業として、私が呼ばれたのですが、私のお話から子供たちが何かを学んでくれたなら、そんなうれしいことはありませんね。今回も、子供たちからパワーをもらった１日でした。

先週の日曜日、私のエージェントであり友人であるマークの家に遊びに行ってきました。（エージェントとは、私の代わりに出版社を周って、仕事を取ってきてくれる人）奥さんのアンドレアは、「はしれワニくん！」を一緒に作った編集者です。アンドレアが料理好きということもあり、お寿司を一緒に作って食べました。９ヶ月になる赤ちゃんもいます。みんなでワイワイと手巻き寿司を楽しみました。

I went to My agent, Mark's place last Sunday.(He's also a good friend of mine) We had temakizushi (a kind of sushi, good for a party occasion!) with his wife, Andrea and their little baby.
It's always fun to eat together!

帰り際に、庭においでよ、と呼ばれて行くと、大きな洋梨の木が！！
おそらく８０〜９０年ものではないかという大木に、これでもか！というくらい洋梨がなっていました。きっとその家に住んだたくさんの家族を楽しませてきたんだろうな〜と思います。（こちらでは中古の家を買っては改装し、を繰り返すだけで、新築はめずらしいです）
私も２０個ほど頂き、家に帰ってりんごと洋梨のクランブルを作りました。
Apple crumbleというのが正式名称ですが、伝統的なイギリスのお菓子で、簡単にできてとてもおいしいんですよ。
写真をとりたかったんですが、気づけばお皿はからっぽになっていました（笑）庭に果物の木があるっていいですね。

At the end of their garden, there was a huge pear tree! Apparently it's about 80 or 90 years old, and was full of beautiful pears!
Through generations, this tree must have fed lots of families.
I got about 20 pears, and some apples back home. I baked Apple & pear crumble.I intended to take a picture of it, but it was gone in a flash!(My flat mates loved it!)

映画「ノッティングヒルの恋人」で有名になったロンドンのエリア、ノッティングヒルで毎年行われているカーニバルに行ってきました！
なんと世界で、２番目に大きなカーニバルだそうです。（１位はもちろん、リオデジャネイロ！）着飾った人たちが踊りまくり、見学者も踊ったりして楽しかったです。大きなイベントだけあって、警備も厳重。馬に乗った警官がたくさんいました。

London's famous district, Notting Hill holds the 2nd biggest carnival in the world every year. I have lived in England for over 8 years, but I had never been there!Apparently about 20,000 people turn up every year.Everyone was dressed in their original costumes, and danced for hours!
Of course in this scale of event, anything could happen. So police on horses were everywhere.(They are normally very friendly though. You can take pictures with them!)



なんと２万人の観客で賑わうこのイベント。
歩行者天国も多く、そこにはカリビアン系の屋台がたくさん。私もジャークチキンというのを食べてみました。とてもおいしかったです。
一度は行ってみたかったカーニバルに行けて、満足でした。

しかし、道はすごいことに。。。（写真右）

Some roads were blocked, and there were lots of stalls selling Caribbean food. I tried Jerk chicken.It was quite tasty.
I wish I could dance a bit more though, I really liked it!

Hello there!
It's been a looooong time since I wrote here.
This summer has been full of events to me. I had to move out unwillingly from the place I had lived for 4 years. It's really hard to find a nice place with good rent in London!
I'm happy here in the new flat, sharing with 3 other people.(and they are all very nice!)

さてさて、先日は大型書店チェーンのウォーターストーンズから依頼を受け、最寄りの支店で読み聞かせ会をしてきました。ハムステッド地区は、奥様が多い地区なので、週末の１１時は無理だったようです。。。中々人が集まってくれず。それでも楽しく子供たちと触れ合ってきました。

Well, I had a reading session at Waterstone's in Hampstead the other day. Waterstone's is one of the major book dealers in Britain.
Hampstead is quite a laid back area especially on the weekends.
It seemed 11am on Saturday was far too early for the people here :->
Although I had just a few families and kids around, I enjoyed the event very much.



小学校へは何度も訪問しているので、５歳〜は慣れているのですが、今回は２歳児など、幼児が多く、ちょっと勝手が違いました。
小学生くらいになると、お話を一冊静かに聞けるのですが、２歳児にはまだまだつらいようです。お話よりも、絵を指差して楽しんだりしていました。
今度は、もっと幼児にもウケるような読み方、見せ方を研究してみようと思います。今後の課題ですね[:楽しい:]

I am experienced talking to primary students, but this time, most of the kids were about 2.It's fascinating how differently they approach to books from older children. For 2 years olds, listening to one story to the end seemed too long, and they preferred to pick some interesting things in pictures. The kids and their parents and myself had a wonderful time, but I will have to improve my way of reading to smaller kids by next time! Kanako Usui旅行編 / on holiday

こんにちは！
先日５日間、１人でウェールズへ行ってきました。
ロンドンからバスで約４時間半。ロンドンの汚染された空気と違い、海辺の空気は、フレッシュで少し冷たく気持ちよかったです。
残念ながら５日間のうち２日しか天気はよくなかったのですが、それでも十分楽しんできました。

Hi there!
I went on a 5 day holiday in Mumbles, Wales. It's about 4 and 1/2 hour away by coach from London. As soon as I got off the coach, I realised the air was so much fresher there!
Unfortunately, the weather wasn't that good for 2 days out of 5 though, I enjoyed the break throughly.



ロッシーリというウェールズの端の端へ行ったときは、あまりの風景の広大さときれいさに、感動しました。羊が崖にいるのが驚きでした。（農場など、平らな場所では見かけるのですが・・・。）

I hopped on a bus to Rhossili on the first day. (Rhossili is in the South Gower.) I was blown away by the spectacular view!
It had a vast sandy beach, and the endless hills. Because of the typical weather down there (rainy, you know.), everywhere was covered in deep green.I walked for about 4 hours there, listening to the sound the sea...Wonderful!



ウェールズは、景色の良さも絶品ですが、人が本当にいい！
皆のんびりしていて、おしゃべり好きです。
バスでも魚屋でも、どこでも気軽に話しかけてきてくれるのです。
私は、新しい出会いが大好きなので、おじいちゃんやおばあちゃん、おじさんおばさん、バスの運転手や魚屋のおばさん、子供など、毎日話し相手には困りませんでした。

ロンドンで、疲れ果てた後に行ったからか、ウェールズの５日間は特別な思い出になりました。やはり時には都会の喧噪を離れて、のんびりブラブラ、知らない場所で知らない人たちの暮らしをみるのも大切だと思いました。

I loved people in Mumbles as much as the scenery in Wales.
Everyone was taking their time, never rush, and they all loved chatting to strangers. I found no problem to find someone to talk to anywhere around there, on a buse, at a fishmonger, on the street, just anywhere!

Apart from the busy, crowded, tiring London, I could finally recharge myself for the rest of the Summer. I love going to a strange place on my own. またまた観劇してきました！
今回は、１９３０年代にアルフレッド・ヒッチコック監督が映画化したことで有名な「３９階段」。ロンドンの中心地、ピカデリーサーカスのど真ん中にある小さな劇場です。私は４列目でしたが、舞台からの距離は１m半と近い！
役者の表情もよく見え、役者と観衆の心の距離も近い気がしました。

４人の役者が何十人という役を演じるという、すばらしい演劇でした。
ロード・オブ・ザ・リングスは３時間でしたが、これは１時間半。でも４人の役者なのですから、それが限界だと思います。
ロード・オブ・ザ・リングスは史上最高額の費用を費やしたそうなので、舞台や衣装など、すばらしかったですが、こちらはかなり低予算。そのため、スーツケースを椅子に見立てたり、はしごを橋に見立てたりと、工夫をほどこしてあり、本当に面白かったです。

I went to see "The 39 Steps" at Criterion Theatre in Picadilly Circus last night.(Picadilly Circus is right in the middle of London)
The story is famous for Alfred Hichcock's 1930s film.
Criterion Theatre is so small that I was only about 4 feet away from the actors.(The front row was a half a foot off the stage!)
It had an intimate atmosphere between the actors and the audience.

What was most amazing was that there were only 4 casts for 150 roles!
They performed so hilariously, all of the audience couldn't stop laughing. The play was just over 1 hour and a half.It's short, but I guess that's the limit the four casts can take.
The theatre design was simple, and I love it!
They used suitcases as seats on a train, and a ladder as a bridge.
It was a very imaginative theatre.

昨晩は、ロード・オブ・ザ・リングの演劇を見てきました！
カナダのトロント公演を経て、ロンドンに上陸したこの演劇。映画の方は全く興味がなかったのですが、舞台美術が評判だったので、行ってきました！

I went to see The Lord of The Rings at a theatre last night.
The play first opened in Toronto, Canada. I was never so keen on its film, but I read a good review on its theatre design, so I took a chance!



すばらしかったです！

小さい舞台で、映画のスケールを見事に表現していました。役者さんたちも素晴らしく、照明、舞台装置、効果音など、とても効果的でした。
さすがは総額１６億円の演劇です。。。舞台装置などは、とっても高そうでした。
やっぱり演劇や、ライブはいいですね！生で観るのは、本当にいいです。
ロンドンは演劇が盛んで、安いチケットは２０００円程度からあるので、休みの日には家族連れが沢山来ています。子供たちにとっても、いい経験になると思います。

は〜。まだまだ余韻の残る、いいお芝居を観れてとても幸せでした。

And I am proud of myself for taking the chance! It was FANTASTIC!

Despite the size of the stage, the play didn't loose the scale of the world of the lord of the rings. The actors and the actresses played and sang well. The lighting, the stage set, and the sound were effective too.

It's very special to see a live performance. The Theatre is very popular in London, and some tickets can be as cheap as 10 pounds.
When children are off school, I see many families go to theatres.
I think it's a wonderful way to spend a holiday.
It must be inspirational for kids too.

発見！発見！
タクシーの待ち合い場所。タクシーの運転手さんたちが、寒い日には暖かい飲み物、暑い日には冷たい飲み物、また軽いスナックやサンドイッチが買える場所、それがこの緑の建物です。とってもかわいいですよね。
冬に通りがかった時には、この屋根の上はコケで覆われていました。
いかにも絵本のキャラクターたちが住んでいそうな、小さな小屋です。

I found this little shop, where taxi drivers can buy tea and snacks!
When I walked pass this in the winter, the roof was covered by moss.
I can imagine some characters from children's books living in this lovely little shed!(Having teas and biscuits!)

こんなかわいいストリートパネルを発見！この家の持ち主が管理しているのでしょうが、夏の間は植物の生長も早いので、きっと頻繁にカットしているんでしょうね。

I spotted this rather NICE! street sign.
The owner of the house must be looking after the hedge though, it should be quite a job during the Summer!(because the hedge grows so quickly!)]]>
